To register as self-employed, visit the HMRC website and complete the online self assessment registration. You will need your national insurance number, personal details and business information. Once registered, HMRC will provide an UTR (unique taxpayer reference), which is necessary to file your tax return. You have to register by 5 October, when you start your self-employment, after the tax year. Keep an eye on income and expenses, as you have to submit annual tax returns.
